edited January 14 in Start here and say hello!

I know rules have recently changed but I am currently in receipt of LWRCA and pip enhanced rate and low mobility. My adult child is going through psychotic episode and has been told by the psychiatrist he cannot work and will not be able to attend uni in September as he had hoped as he definitely will relapse due to anxiety and pressures. So I am applying for pip for him and UC has been sorted with me as his appointee as he isn’t lucid much of the time.

My question is I can apply for Carers once he is on PIP but will I still be deducted it as I will not be entitled to the carers element due to recieving LWRCA. If it is deducted there is no point me claiming it.

Also my 16yr old lives with me who is homeschooled with disabling anxiety issues and won’t leave the house without me. I need to apply for PIP for her. But can she apply for Carers too either for me or my son if I can’t? Homeschooling hours work differently to mainstream schools and hours are lot shorter and more like part time.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this same situation and please advise. TIA

There are two things Carers Allowance (paid separately) and Carers Element (paid under UC).

As you have identified the same person getting LCWRA & Carers Element isn't possible.

If you apply for Carers Allowance for son then it will be deducted in full from your UC award. So there would be no financial gain.

Hi @sage26 and welcome to the community!

Yes, your daughter can still apply for carers allowance for you or your son even if she is in receipt of PIP as long as she meets the eligibility criteria for young carers.

Hope this was helpful, please reach out if you would like more information or support.

If your UC still includes child element for your 16 year old then this means they are still in full time non advanced education, even though they are home schooled. If they were part time then you wouldn’t be entitled to child element of UC for them.

This means in this case they would not be able to claim carers allowance in their own right.
