SEN secondary school placement appeals

Hi ,
Please can someone help me. My son has learning disabilities and other illnesses. He attends a SEN school. He has been given a place at a school that was not my preference. I have been told the preferred school says they can not meet his needs. I also have issues with his EHC Plan. It contains things about him that are outdated with a few new things. Its a jumble of a mess and paints an incoherant picture of how he is now. What is the process of appeal and can I change the EHC plan ? Was the EHC plan a decider in him getting a placement at secondary school. Are EHC plans always jumbled. There's things on here from 2018.

Good luck. Please lets us know how you get on.

Hi @saz786
It sounds like you are having in a very stressful situation at the moment but you are being a wonderful advocate for your son by reaching out on here for support.Have you been having regular annual EHCP reviews? This is when you and other professionals have a meeting once a year and discuss the EHCP in depth about what has gone well and what needs to change. If you haven't then definitely contact your local authority's Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) team as it is law that annual reviews happen.
I see Bluebell has linked IPSEA above and they are legal experts in England when it comes to education in England so it may be worth exploring their website or contacting their helpline if you want to know where you and your son stand legally.
From what you have described, it sounds like it may be worth requesting an early EHCP review as you have said the EHCP is jumbled, out of date and doesn't portray his needs accurately anymore.
EHCPs shouldn't be jumbled at all. They should be provide a full detailed overview of your sons needs, what his support needs are and how his needs are going to be met. It should also be up to date.
I definitely recommend contacting SENDIASS if you haven't already. They are education specialists for your local area who should be able to offer information, advice and support around EHCP support, setting up meetings with schools and attend them etc.
If you have a specific school in mind that you would like your son to go to you can request for it to be named on the EHCP during the review.
Hope that was helpful, please reach out if you have further questions or would like more support😀
