Upcoming changes to benefits

There's a back lash from the public if you read comments on different media.

I read a GB news article about the cuts earlier and even the comments there were largely critical of the govt!

Regardless of the potential devastation these measures will cause to people, the way this is being handled by Labour is utterly disgraceful. The shameful language, drip feeding and delaying is evidently causing severe distress to peoples mental health, my own included. Shame on them

This is on itv news today. Starmer meeting the ones who disagree with cuts twice this week.

I'm in the support group for UC/ESA and PIP and am terrified. I keep doom scrolling and panicking. My benefits are my only source of income that pay my bills, food etc and I live alone, so no one else is there to pick up the slack.
How have the govt sunk this low? Even Sunack had to back off this eventually. Why is Starmer so intent on going through this with PIP - it's not work related or is it just about how worthless disabled/sick people are who can't work are to them? I don't understand the motive. Do people think Starmer will be able to push this through?
Would the Lords/courts be any use whatsoever?
Also what's the obessession with 'young people' getting PIP for 'mild depression' like GPs and DWP hand out PIP like candy to someone who lost their gerbil six years ago (no offense to gerbils or gerbil lovers) - as is mental health isn't an actual thing? I seem to remember a 40 page doc, having multiple interviews and it not being quick or easy.
Also does anyone know if this is targeted at new claiments (not that that makes it excusable at all) or will I and others in support group loose money reguardless? They seem very, very keen to rip apart people specifically not fit for work.
I'm so, so scared., I keep ruminating and catastrophising. I was already scared I'd loose PIP at my next assessment in 2027 but maybe I won't even have to wait that long. Any advice for just trying to keep calm during this or ways we can protect ourselves if they go through with it? I feel worthless most days - I really don't need the govt shouting it.
The one slither of hope is that the public of all politicals swathes don't seem to like/support this, but when has that ever stopped a govt? I've contacted my MP but I doubt it'll matter. I feel so stupid. I actually voted for Labour. They aren't my prefered party but it was the only way to get the tories out in my area but now…I actually thought they would help at least a bit. Or simply not be as bad as the Tories.
Any advice for trying not to spiral right now or to cope/manage both before and after they take these benefits away?

It's won't hurt to write to your MP whatever side they're on, I think. But Labour MPs need to be made aware that if this goes through, they can't win long term. They can't get back in by alienating their own constituencies.

Don't worry about how it looks - I guarantee your MP will be getting lots of these letters as this progresses!

I hope it was delayed cos they could be a good sign that they’re worried. They can’t control Dianne Abbott as she would stick her principles as would Jeremy Corbyn. I also really hope they stick to their guns on this. Even you you can imagine Starmer bullying them with removing the whip they must know that they risk losing their seat at the next election

It’s hard to see who their voters could be . They’ve alienated everyone

what the public are against the cuts ?

Almost all the comments on X are against even with reform voters

They wont stand a chance, also noticed that Anas Sarwar is backing the cuts also 😠wish all these MPS had backbone and stood up to starmer!

Hi. I am in exactly the same situation as you, on ESA & PIP. Terrified of what's to come. Feeling helpless, I just want to know what's going to happen to us all. I'm more than stressed out. X

According to Elene Clifford, that Fraser Nelson/Dispatches hit piece on disabled people was thought of well in advance during the Tory government and Labour have merely picked up the stick in the game of disabled pinata.

Facebook also, many calling them to stop calling themselves labour! they are not labour, not even torys. they are the bottom of the lowest!

oh wow . I read on a link on this forum Labour think by going tough they’ll fight off Tory’s and reform. That would explain why they were against Tory cuts but once reform changed their manifesto to bringing in benefit cuts and are now doing well labour thinks they need to be anti sick and disabled too. If that’s correct makes sense

At least this shows that…
a) these MPs didn’t immediately back down after the meeting with Starmer last night, and
b) Starmer seems to view them as a credible enough threat that he’s initiating talks with them
ETA: I can’t find the original comment now, but my comment here is in response to this article:

and Debbie abrams is leading the fight back
She would be my vote to replace starmer if he can’t be talked down from whatever bad advice he’s following right now (she’s actually a central leaning mp, not heavy left and been an mp for 14 years)
What???
Have they really fooled you into thinking they're on our side? First it was Timms now it's Abrahams…
😣

It needs to be explained to them that, even if they take a few votes from Reform (doubtful anyway), it won't make up for the loss of 200+ seats.

I’m on legacy esa and pip , migration letter any time plus pip review form . No idea what’s happening. I don’t understand though that I’ve read dwp have been training extra case managers for pip to try and cut down on assessments. I’ve heard of ppl getting pip on paper assessments. Why do that if they plan to change pip ?
I really hope that once they see the backlash they water these reforms down. They were expecting this to be popular. At the end of the day they have to have some voters left .
