Disability Pride Month is a time to celebrate disabled people, identities, and communities. For parents of disabled children, it can also be a time to reflect on how far you’ve come, what you’ve learned and what disability pride means to you and your family!

For many parents, it may be…

Pride in your child not because they “overcome” or they’re “inspirational” but just for being themselves.

Pride in your own journey as a parent and all the steps you have taken to learn and advocate for your child.

Pride in the connections you’ve built with other families, support networks and communities.

So how can you celebrate disability pride this month?

  • Celebrate your childs own milestones on their terms
  • Let them know how proud you are of them
  • Read books, watch shows/films or listen to podcasts by disabled artists
  • Talk openly about disability as part of human diversity. It’s not something to be ashamed of!
  • Attend a disability pride event
  • Introduce your child to disabled role models they can relate to
  • Reflect on your own journey too because you have grown as an advocate and caregiver and that is definitely worth celebrating too!

I'd be really interested to know in what does Disability Pride mean to you as a parent or carer? And is it something you celebrate?
