Because the payment was made by the DWP in the first place?

I know you said you wouldn't ask them to recalculate previous months now but I guess starting regularly now looks honest and it would look strange to stop..

If they can see I haven't been updating in the past then why didn't they contact me.

As you say, best to use all my payment and have a credit card bill to pay. I guess I'd have to do nothing if it went below my current capital

Some people have been told to update savings every month both over and under £6k. But as far as I'm aware, there is no legal reason to do that. Only when it goes through a threshold and would change the payment entitlement.

My experience of UC so far is that the staff generally don't fully understand the rules or the system. I know I'm an unusual case and I was migrated early…but I've seen the same issues happening to others several months later, so it's not like the staff are learning from mistakes either. They're also still giving out contradictory information. It really does feel like we just have to 'muddle through' and deal with whatever they say when they say it.

Just for reference, it's not pointless updating in the middle of an AP. That figure would still be used for the end of that AP, so it would still change your payments. The problem is that you will have spent more money by the end of your AP, so if you don't update it on the final day, then you could be underpaid instead of overpaid.

If it goes down through another £250 threshold then you have to declare that as well.

I think we worked out you had £7,111 total when declared. So if it goes up past £7,250 then you have to declare it. And if it goes down past £7,000 then you have to declare it.

If you can keep it between £7,000 and £7,250 then you do not have to declare anything and your payments will stay exactly the same.

The DWP do not know that the payment wasn't all spent.

Any money not spent becomes savings.

The DWP cannot check everyone's account every month. It is the claimants responsibility to say how much savings they have.

It all boils down to me not knowing in past to update monthly and now I learned that I should do.

I have no idea if should tell them about past, you say if was you, you wouldn't so guess that's best option.

I think it's best to keep updating now I started unless I say I only updated because I got an email and continue to act as if I think I don't have to.

Yes if those implementing rules don't know, What's the hope for us.

Also worry it will be case of purposely not informing past now I know about monthly updates.😟

I got the to-do that you did and the only thing I had to update was my savings. I don’t have over £6000 but since that to-do have updated my savings every month. So, that to-do has triggered me to update regularly and I imagine I’m not the only one. I think it would be a quite usual response

Yeh maybe a few who haven't in past and are doing as I assume it was a carpet bombed email. I've been all over the place as to what to do in future and reprocussions of past mistakes.

@OverlyAnxious do you think this could be the case, they'll know i updated this time but looks like purposely not declaring the past months. I dunno, it's all getting to me a bit, sorry.

I think you're giving the UC staff far too much credit. They basically just do whatever the computer tells them to do.

If it hasn't flagged up a discrepancy in savings (which would have triggered a bank statement check) then they have no reason to check your previous savings on the system.

If you look at your journal, it should show that you completed the 'to do' at the same time as updating savings. So they'll know the reason that you updated savings for the first time was because of the 'to do'.

Many thanks for your reply and apologies for late reply. Yes I do over analyse stuff but that's anxiety for you.

Yes I have completed the to do list, just as it's the first time I've updated since I started on UC I thought that maybe that would trigger when the person who works out the future payments turns up but I can't help that..

I just don't want to be held accountable for not saying anything now I found out I should've monthly.. Thanks

    You're welcome.

There isn't a person working out future payments. It's all done by the computer system. 🙂

i, honestly I wouldn’t worry too much. If they’ve asked you to update the information, just put the current amount that’s in your account now. Money building up over a few months, especially when your UC is being paid into the same account and you haven’t been going out much, is completely understandable. A lot of people are struggling with anxiety and staying home more lately, so you’re definitely not the only one.

As long as you’re truthful and explain it clearly if needed, I can’t see why it would look like wrongdoing. Hope things start feeling a bit easier for you soon and the update goes smoothly

@OverlyAnxious yeh thinking about it there's so many but as it's all done by computer I don't get why it hasn't flagged me up for not updating monthly even though the oness is on me to declare.

@Johnrude123 I didn't know I had to update monthly but now I do so am I being truthful now not declaring the past. I don't know. I've credit card to pay as capital will probably increase again .

4 days to go until end of assessment period and my anxiety hindering my decision making.

Do I not tell them even though I now know you should and continue how I did for those first 7 months or start telling them from now on which make them wonder why I didn't those first months.

I would still be not telling them if I didn't get the message to updates savings and message here.

Should I tell them about 1st 7 months.

Apologies if going over things again, that's anxiety. Regards.

It's your decision. Personally I would leave the past in the past, I definitely wouldn't go back over those 7 months unless specifically asked to do so by the review team.

You might find this post interesting, which is the most up to date info we have from a UC review team member.

    Thanks I'll have a look.

Yes I know it's my decision and I'm terrible at making them however I recall you saying that if I get a review then I'd not have to pay future overpayments back.

Agree, probably not good to mention past I was just worried that by me starting to report monthly it may trigger them to wonder why I didn't for the first 7 months.

  • OverlyAnxious

Yes, that's true, if you don't start updating now then you could end up with overpayments to repay in future, but only if your savings have gone up again. Have you checked to see whether the total has gone through another £250 threshold? If it's still within the same range then there is no need to report this month anyway, so that should make the decision easier.

I do know what you mean though as I've been wondering whether I should change the way I calculate mine after reading that other post. But think I've decided to just keep doing it the same as before been unless I get told to do it differently by UC.

I'll have a look however I do have a credit card bill that needs paying, I'm unsure if that would be bad to do seeing as it is a bill.

As you say I think I will, my dad says carry on not knowing I have to but doesn't sit well with me even though could open can of worms.
