Derotation osteotomy
Hello,
My Husband (38) with CP, has had a femoral/tibial derotation osteotomy. He was completely independent before (no walking aids).
6 months post surgery he is walking with elbow crutches & has reached a plateau in his rehab, and he's becoming frustrated with not being back to his baseline mobility yet (although we were told 1-2 years).
I just wondered if anyone had any experience of similar circumstances and/or had any advice ?
On a side note, we would really LOVE to get away somewhere that is accessible (preferably self catering, but would consider a hotel- bonus points for a hot tub/spa). Does anyone have any recommendations of places to stay in the UK?
Thanks so much 😊

Hi @MilliganHermione
I hope your husband has a smooth recovery, it sounds like that was a major operation!
We do have a wonderful CP network with CP specialists here on the community @SaraC_Scope @Richard_Scope @Lucy_Scope who offer specialist advice, support and information to people with CP and their families.
There a few websites such as Disabled Holidays, Accessible Holiday Escapes and Limitless Travel that may be worth exploring😊2 -
It is very normal to feel frustrated with recovery after a big surgery. However, it is common for recovery to take longer in patients with cerebral palsy.
What professionals have been involved in his aftercare? Is he currently weight-bearing?
Best wishes,
Lucy

Hi Lucy, sorry for the delay in my reply.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.
He has private neurophysiotherapy (she also recommended the gym, so we have been doing that), and his surgeon recommended hydrotherapy, which I have been doing with him. He has had OT input, and he's had new orthotics made too.
He's currently walking on crutches, still putting weight through his arms. He is able to weightbear when walking (with the crutches), but really struggles to weightbear on his operated leg when standing still.
Thanks so much for your help 😊

We stayed at Maison Des Landes hotel in Jersey (Channel Islands) last year and are returning this year. It’s fully accessible, purpose built and we loved it. Jersey is great too - brilliant weather, plenty of accessible stuff to do and easy to get to know the ferry from Poole but it’s a short flight alternatively. We would highly recommend it
