How do you get out of feeling low?

Glad to hear you had a great weekend with your family @SueHeath. Family time is super precious, isn't it! Did you get up to anything particularly nice as a family over the weekend?0

@proudmumforever
Thanks for sharing. I can relate to the poor concentration while reading, I find it hard to concentrate on anything longer than an article - I haven’t read a book for years sadly even though I used to love reading. I hope you are OK today.
Many thanks for all the tips. I have to ask, is your name based on the non-alcoholic cocktail?
Thank you

Good to see you posting a bit @66Mustang - I certainly miss you.It's great to see how well you're doing with your macaroni cheese. I add a little Dijon mustard as I'm making the roux, & always have some of a certain brand of brown sauce with it once it's cooked! Perhaps not much of a change, but I also make spaghetti cheese, which is really nice with wholewheat spaghetti, & I substitute some of the milk with a single cream alternative to give a slightly different taste.I hope you're keeping well, or as well as can be.0

Hi @chiarieds, thanks for the kind message.
Sauce would be controversial in our house!! My parents often have quite heated (but good spirited) debates as to whether it is acceptable to add sauce to a quality homemade dish! One side says it spoils the taste and you might as well have an Asda ready meal if you are going to add sauce. The other side says it enhances the flavour and if sauce is to be banned, then why not salt/pepper as well?
Personally, I’m on the side of “have whatever you enjoy”.
Spaghetti cheese definitely sounds nice, I might have to give that a try!!

My son's (dads) took all the kids out for a game of football while us ladies got the food ready - it's just like feeding the 5000 when there all here together ha ha.0 -
How are you keeping today @66Mustang? I enjoyed reading about your parents "debates" on sauce. I'm not a big fan of condiments myself, but I do like mayo and hollandaise. Not together, of course. It's a very British sort of conversation I feel Food is always a great comfort to me when I'm feeling low, especially comfort food.0

I love condiments, tartar, ketchups etc. Pepper on everything except chips.
Hope your OK @66Mustang.

@Alex_Scope @Sandy_123
I’m well today, thanks, but I have something coming up on Sunday that is causing me a lot of anxiety. It’s the birthday of the family member who causes me issues with their bad moods and we have to go to their house for the day. I find this hard as I have no bedroom to “escape” to like I do at home. I’m thinking of buying some edible treats to be delivered the following week so that I have something to look forward to to get me through it.
I also feel bad feeling nervous about going to see an elderly family member when there are people fighting in Ukraine who have something to be properly nervous about!
I hope you are both OK at the moment?

Having something to look forward to is a great strategy @66Mustang I am sorry to hear that it's causing you anxiety.
You mustn't feel guilty for those feelings though, they are valid, and it's doing yourself a disservice. Of course there are horrible things happening in the world, but it doesn't make the anxiety you feel any less real.
I think I remember you mentioning this family member previously. If there's no common ground to work with, it may just have to be a 'grin and bear it' day, but perhaps if you run into trouble, excuse yourself for some fresh air, or pop to the toilet. Anything to break up the time, even just a little bit0 -
Morning @66Mustang happy to see your post - your really beating yourself up about this visit aren't you.
I truely hope it's not as bad as think it's going to be, have you spoken to your parents about your worry ?
I know it's hard not to worry about every thing thats going on in the World, or feel you shouldn't moan or worry or be stressed about things, but you can feel like this about yourself these things don't take away our own thoughts or problems. It's very easy for some one to say "what have you got to worry about" when others are worse off, but they don't know what our feelings are like. I hope that makes sense.
I am liking the idea of the nice treat to look forward to thats your reward for going with the family to some were you don't want to go. BIG hug of me and keep us up dated, we love hearing from you.0 -
@alex_scope @teddybear12 @bekindalways @sueheath
Thanks to everyone for the messages. I guess it is true that my feelings are still valid despite there being people that are worse off.
I have spoken to my parents and they are going to try to make the day a bit shorter for my benefit so we should only be there for maybe 5 hours.
I am just about to order some treats to be delivered next week
Thanks everyone
I hope you are all doing OK today

@66Mustang I'm so sorry you are feeling like this but I know how you feel as I have felt like this for past few days now and it's not very nice feeling atm I feel worthless and hopeless but I just put on a brave face but deep down I'm hurting for various reasons but I normally put my music on and try to block things out but then I do have my hyper moments when I'm singing and dancing 🕺 😅 about I hope you feel better soon thinking of you0
-
@Nicetomeetyou22 I'm sorry to hear about how you're feeling at the moment. Can we help with any of the reasons you're hurting?
You'll forgive me for asking if you've already said, but can I ask what support you're getting for your mental health day to day? From your GP for example?
I find music can be a real pick me up, and really help me when I'm struggling to feel motivated, or just to help me process the feelings I'm having Dancing is also a great mood booster too, but not something I'm brave enough to do in public!1 -
@Alex_Scope thank you for your reply I hope that you are well today yes I'm getting support from my GP he's started me on anxiety tablets and referred me to a therapist I had phonecall earlier today from a therapist they have put me on a waiting list to be seen could take upto a year but its a step in the right ✅ direction 😀 so it's just a case of taking meds doing yoga and keeping busy from a day to day basis 😀0
-
I'm doing well thank you
That's good to hear @Nicetomeetyou22 and glad things are moving forward for you, and you feel comfortable with it all, although I hope you don't have to wait a whole year for a therapist!
Do you have a favourite Yoga position? And keeping busy is a good thing, as long as you find a balance. It's important not to overdo it
I find keeping a journal is helpful for keeping track of my worries, as well as what I enjoy day to day, and understanding the patterns when I feel most anxious. But journals don't work for everyone of course1 -
@Alex_Scope I don't have fav yoga position although I do write down my feelings aswell like you I also like to write short poems from time to time mainly about my feelings1
-
Ah that's a very creative way to channel them @Nicetomeetyou220
-
@Alex_Scope thank you then once I have wrote poems etc I hide my book it's called private poem/feelings book2
-
@66Mustang Goodluck for tomorrow I hope all goes well 🙏1
-
Thanks everyone for thinking of me that’s really kind and appreciated.
I’m looking forward to it in a way as we are having a big meal - you have to look at the positives! I have also been told I can go upstairs if things get too much for me which helps a bit. Hopefully the family member is in a good mood.
I hope everyone else is OK and having a nice weekend!
Thank you2
