Ministers are exploring ways to soften the blow of billions of pounds of cuts to benefits amid a major Labour revolt, The i Paper understands.
Tweaks are being considered to the plan to save £5bn by cutting personal independence payments (PIP) for disabled people, and universal credit for those off work with sickness as up to 170 MPs threaten to rebel against the changes.
But while ministers are holding talks with concerned MPs, they remain minded to push ahead with the policy as it is currently planned, confident that they can win the argument and win over doubters.
Even if the Government did try and soften the welfare crackdown, The i Paper has been told that many MPs will still rebel as they want the entire plan scrapped.
One of the changes reported to be under consideration to water down the changes is giving disability claimants a longer transition period if they are due to lose a benefit to apply for an alternative form of welfare support.
But The i Paper understands rebels are determined to vote against the cuts when they are introduced in legislation due this month and want the money saved to be raised instead from taxing wealthy individuals.
Rebels are also understood to be pleased with recent announcements on extending free school meals and a partial U-turn on winter fuel payment cuts, as well as signals that the two-child benefit cap could be scrapped.
But they have privately warned that this will not be enough to get them to change their minds and back the welfare cuts, which they fear could be a political mistake on the scale of the scrapping of the universal winter fuel allowance.
“Over 150 colleagues are refusing to back down on this issue and have signalled this to the Government and Chief Whip,” one MP said.
“The Government needs to think again and prioritise the needs of those who are most in need.
“These measures are a betrayal of Labour’s core values and will only exacerbate the suffering of those already struggling after 14 years of the Tories.

“It’s time for the Government to listen to its own MPs, put the interests of the vulnerable first and tax those with the broadest shoulders properly.”
Rebel Labour MP Rachael Maskell said: “Disabled people are very frightened about losing vital support which enables them to live and function.
“Government must end the speculation and end their plans to cruelly make disabled people suffer more than they already do.
“Government must recognise that it got these cuts completely wrong, ditch them and move forward in ensuring we have a social security system which properly and adequately supports all in need while the health sector presses ahead to better manage those in ill health.”

Why doesn’t starmer explain what these other benefits are ? Is it because he means giving TP for the 5 weeks instead of 2 while waiting for uc basic to start ? But if we are unable to engage with work will we be eligible ?

None of this makes sense, when they scrap the wca I presume there won't be a LCW, just a binary fit for work or lcwra/pip so what other benefits are there to claim?
It's going to be a disaster if this passes, a chaotic disaster. There will be people clearly not fit for work, who will lose PIP and LCWRA being given sanctions for not being able to work, this will be terrible.

Ive sent an email to my local mp (who has said in the past she doesnt like the changes to pip & certain other aspects of the cuts), Angela & John McDonnel, asking them not to fall for it pointing out that there is no other disability benefit its just PIP & asking why something the public don't want, labour members don't want is been pushed is it to destroy the labour party? Asked them to check the facts & not the spin. That unlike the WFA cut which attacked people across the spectrum the disability cuts attack their own voters. That people are been pushed to reform because why bother voting red or blue if its just the same. That these cuts will also push away parents whose kids get DLA as they might get help in the future.
