"It isn’t religion that causes the problems"

    It is, always.

The rest of us do not care which religion is favoured. I don't care whether someone believes in aliens from Mars or any other entity in the sky. We should be allowed to challenge ancient rituals and express disgust at ongoing crimes committed in the name of religion without being shouted down. Nobody seems interested in the article posted, only themselves.

Noise pollution via loudspeakers is not uncommon on pavements where I live. No respect or consideration is shown whoever they speak for so I understand Rubin's comments completely. Autistic people can't be brainwashed.

It's must be lovely to live in hope of special protection and salvation afforded to 'believers' but I am offended by those who imagine that ONLY those with a religious identity share particular virtues and values.

    @Ranald precisely.

He is exactly the sort of 'Christian' who would be receiving an extremely wide-berth from me!

It's a shame that people who claim to be Christian are anything but. Jesus taught to not to judge and look down on people ,yet myself and others I know have been from this particular church judged, and treated terribly. You see them in the street, although this has reduced lately shouting fire and brimstone at people.

Personally I think any form for public religious displays should not be allowed at all. Religion should always be kept as a private matter and not impose on others. I would love to report one local church for this, as every saturday without fail they take over the shopping area and blast loud music while trying to convert everyone who passes them. I don't know if you can report them for this or stop them though, and I don't know how to go about reporting them. But its just harassment for everyone who doesn't want to hear it and just want to do a basic shop without being harrassed all the time.

Even if i believe in the Great Green Arkleseizure?

We live in perpetual fear of the time that we call "The coming of the Big White Handkerchief".

Girl_no1, "Some of the most 'Christian' people I have ever met are those of whom I have zero idea if they are practicing Christians or not"

Yes, good people recognise one another.

"On the other hand, some of those who are extremely vociferous regarding their 'devotion' are some of the most judgemental, vindictive, and spiteful people I have ever encountered"

The latter sort inevitably mention their religiousness.

Each to His / Her own

As long as they don't try to preach their beliefs to me or anyone else

    I say leave them alone

I am shocked at the unfiltered anger expressed on this thread today; way OTT and unwarranted. Nothing is more important than forum members. Nothing is more important than the here and now.

Unwarranted??? There's been some horrific comments on here that have since been deleted, ripping to shreds my (and others) core values, then Ranald calls me a professional offence taker who is throwing a wobbly (again removed since I reported that abuse).

I don't push religion down anyone's throat, I generally keep it to myself, but I have a right to be angry at the absolute abuse that has been gleefully dished out on this thread.

I don't care what people believe, but I would never be so evil and hateful to rip that person's beliefs to shreds with a huge ****-eating grin on my face.

I would never call someone a professional offence taker or accuse them of throwing a wobbly for defending their values.

I suffered so much abuse in my past and part of that is for my beliefs, beliefs that I have never pushed on others but beliefs I hold dear.

Imagine if I viciously attacked these people for their core values... That would be truly unwarranted 😡

But that's exactly what you're doing! You are being really aggressive and I don't understand why.

How can somebody you've never met rip your core values to shreds so easily? This is a safe forum and abuse isn't tolerated.

You are usually engaging and generous. That's why I'm shocked that you turned on your friend over something most of us have a healthy scepticism about.

I don't know if I can explain with words that appear meaningful, I can only say that words can indeed hurt, even if there was no intent to cause that hurt.

If you don't have a belief, then of course you might not understand if another feels, that on a disability forum of all places, that words can indeed cause great upset.

Someone who's suffered abuse in the past, well that too can bring the unwelcome past back, so in everything we say we have to be careful how we say it, as I don't think anyone usually means to say the wrong thing.

This forum matters to me enormously & I've received abusive comments in the past. I can assure that this does indeed hurt, & made me want to take time away from the forum, which I have done. These comments were nothing to do with religion, but any upset is very unpleasant.

When it's something that really matters to you; something that's a part of you, then unintentional hurt really was caused to @Wheeled_Weapon. I wonder how you know that 'most of us have a healthy scepticism' @WhatThe; I certainly haven't got a clue.

Surely this is who we are, disabled people united together despite our different disorders, & showing understanding about any different opinions we may have. I don't think discussions about religion, or any other matter should be shut down, & no reason for that to happen, so long as we show respect to each other.

As the Dalai Lama says, ''Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.''

Indeed, words hurt, and I have found this forum not to be a safe space for certain topics.

I really feel gor this victim as well, and I hope he doesn't read the comments on social media covering this story, so much abuse aimed at this person.

Sometimes I wonder if people's names, and photos should be put out there, especially in this age of constant media.

Like it or not we live in a secular country and most of us choose science over speculation. We should not speak about abuse in such casual terms. Verbal abuse towards another member is acceptable on this occasion, is it?

These ridiculous conversations and justifications I will leave to others to challenge or ignore. They don't influence people in the way you might wish for, quite the opposite.

My picture is visible on my profile and I don't give a fig what 'social media' says.

I might think twice before linking to a news story in future, if it is going to cause such a stooshie.
