Pain Management in everyday tasks

A bit of a different post to something I normally do or rant about.
But I know each and everyone of us deal with our old friend pain in very different ways, be it medication, pushing through it or as your doing something, start having an argument with it!!
I will hold my hands up, well as long as my shoulder let meโฆ. I battle early on set osteoarthritis in both hips, osteoarthritis in lower back and right shoulder. More than likely left thumb and left shoulder. But Iโve got a feeling that after seeing a physio on Friday so will be sent off for an x-ray where Iโll glow free such as when I visited Selafield Visitors Centre as a kid. Iโve also got bursitis in my left hip, thanks to an injury on the Sandstone Trail in 2018.
I wouldnโt be surprised if some of my issues are long standing from having s*****c cerebral palsy since 1983, then again factor in ten years as a gardener & estate ranger and then 9 as a support worker, Iโm not surprised my body is swearing full Owdham oaths at me!
Iโve just gone around my flat organising rubbish, sorting out some washing and cleaning the shower as well as put a load in the washing machine for tonight.
Well my hips and back decided to invoke a great deal of pain, they were angry at me for something, must be the Scottish DNA that came out. As I was swearing more than Rab C Neabitt ever did!!
I have 900mg of Gabapentin x3 a day, 30mg of Nefopam x3 a day and Paracetamol x4 a day with Ibuprofen Gel chucked in for good measure.
I have to listen to the old body, thatโs as ratty as a 49 beetle thatโs been stuck in a barn all its life! Then chuck in long covid and other factors, Iโm not surprised holiday insurers are reluctant to insure me.
I just have to rest up and then go again the next day and just do things a small amount at a time.
How does everyone else cope or have a word with there pain?

bless ya, can imagine itโs one of those days that every joint and muscle is behaving like a boxing match, seeing who can outscore the other ๐

Another person with hip Bursitis, though I have bilateral hip Bursitis because I have abnormal hips, my right hip is 6mm lower than my left one, low back pain, osteoarthritis since i was 35. The abnormal hips I was born with but I haven't yet got a diagnosis for the abnormal hips. Someone else who knows what I have to put up with.

๐๐ My hips aren't singing staying alive at the moment!! I've just had 3ยฝ month flare up with the bilateral hip Bursitis so i just manage the symptoms and put up with the pain as I can't afford to buy the ibuprofen 10 %gel as I would need a mortgage to buy it. Pain killers like paracetamol don't work.

If you have to pay for prescriptions it might be worth you doing the yearly direct debit pre payment certificate. I pay a monthly amount and all prescriptions are covered repeat and emergency prescriptions. I get my gel on prescription. I use it almost nightly.

I thought you got an exemption in England if on benefits?

To the original poster pain is a ****. Have you been on a pain management course? Your GP or specialist may be able to refer you. Iโm on a waiting list for 2. One with my spine specialist and one for fibromyalgia from the rheumatologist. I did one about 25 years ago and still use a lot of the techniques. The most helpful one is pacing myself. I try to do 3 jobs a day to keep the house in check. Some days the dishwasher is one job, other days I class it as 2 ๐ Iโm also aware of what jobs cause more pain and what type of pain. If you know your pain well enough to swear at it you know what Iโm talking about ๐. Iโve had chronic spinal pain since I was 16, now nearly 50, so weโve learned to dance together, sometimes it takes the lead and others I wrestle it back. Also be kind to yourself and allow yourself to heal after tasks. Iโve found doing craft work helpful as I still get that hit of achievement and not wasting my time but since the fibro thatโs a lot harder.

Ouch! Iโm fortunate that I get Ibuprofen 10% Gel on my prescriptions, itโs crazy how much the individual items have gotten over the years.

Thatโs a good idea, however if your on qualifying benefits your prescriptions should be free.

I take a shed load of meds โฆ do they work ? Not really, but they take the edge off some days
After attending a residential pain clinic for 3 weeks, 15 years ago โฆ the two biggest things I took from it -
a) the three P's โฆ Planning, Pacing, Prioritising
b.) The body is like an overdraft โฆ whatever you take out of it - you pay for down the line
I was hooked up to computers and Physios assessed movement, pain points from exertion etc - the advice was to have a stopwatch - 15 minutes activity 15 minutes rest
I'm old school in that I've always pushed through the pain barrier in a very masculine occupation so the above is a sort of no no for me. No point starting something if you've got to stop ?
I'm not as bad now as I do listen to my body a bit more and admit to having a cry now and again when the pain causes frustration and grief at missing the old me
My biggest pain can be the ear-ache I get. Not literally, just the rows from the Mrs to stop ๐
