I'm a mum of 2. I have taken the leap and de-registered my 13yo son from mainstream this week to homeschool. My gut was telling me it was the right thing and already I have seen an improvement. My son is known ASC and we are on the pathway for ADHD. He had a burnout in 2024 and since then I don't think I have ever seen him regulated at home as he masks at school. Anyway I just wanted to say hello and say that although I feel I have done the right thing there are nerves and doubt creeping in! Is this normal? πŸ€”

Welcome @MumtoMrMooandBoo82! Thanks for the intro, it's nice to hear a bit about you 😊

Bless him, it sounds like school was massively draining him with what you've said. Of course doubt will creep in, but I say trust your woman's intuition, or even better… your mothers intuition! Have you started looking into plans for homeschooling?

I've tagged our family specialist, @Mary_Scope as she might have something helpful to add when she's in Monday. Hope that's ok 😊

Thank you @Holly_Scope I have been browsing/researching and chatting to other mums of homeschooled children but nothing officially as of yet. I just wanted to gently ease him in and give him time to see if the dysregulation improves. He has completed 7 years in Primary and more or less 2 years in secondary mainstream.

I believe everything happens for a reason and we are excited for this new adventure 😊

@MumtoMrMooandBoo82 Hello, welcome to the community :)

Sending warmth to you and your son for this new chapter in your lives :) I believe in gut feelings too, trusting instinct, and I really hope that your son feels more comfortable and happy with homeschooling πŸ™πŸΌ

    Welcome 😊

My parents thought about taking me out of school but decided against it. My school years were from 1999-2010 and home schooling wasn't as much of a thing back then.

The main reason my parents kept me in school - developing socially alongside peers - never actually manifested, because the school environment was to me so toxic that it caused me to withdraw and maladapt in lots of different ways.

I know my parents didn't do it maliciously and I don't hold it against them. I also know everyone's experiences are different - many autistic people thrive in school. Just because I struggled doesn't mean your son would have, but it sounds like he already was. If he seems to be doing so much better at home, I think you've answered your own question. 😊

Hi @MumtoMrMooandBoo82 and a warm welcome to the community from me!

Doubts and nerves over homeschooling are 100% normal, especially in the beginning. It takes an incredible amount of courage to pull a child out of school but the fact that you are already seeing an improvement is amazing and must be really validating for your instincts!

How are you feeling at the moment?😊

Thank you all for your warm welcome and apologies for the delay in responding. I really appreciate your comments πŸ™πŸ»

I'm feeling ok generally and we have our initial meeting booked in September from the LA EHE team so hoping to get a bit more reassurance and information/support from them. 🀞🏻

I do think over the years my son has masked so much in primary which led to a burnout and I don't think he has really been able to recover properly since. I think even though he appeared to be doing well and I always believed in mainstream for him his nervous system was telling a different story especially at home.

We shall see! Thanks again to you all
