Labour doubles down on slashing billions from DWP's disability benefits bill

Currently, the DWP does not have a statutory legal duty to safeguard the wellbeing of vulnerable claimants. In a statement made years ago, Therese Coffey remarked, "I do not actually think it is the responsibility of DWP to have that statutory duty. We are not the local council, social services, doctors, and other organisations."
If your doctor has stated that you are mentally unstable to work, this should be taken into consideration by the DWP. You can inform the DWP about your conditions and how they affect your ability to work.
However, the DWP does have policies and procedures in place to support vulnerable individuals. On 8 January 2025, oral questions were raised in Parliament regarding the safeguarding of vulnerable claimants.
Additionally, there is an ongoing inquiry by the Work and Pensions Committee, which is examining how the DWP supports vulnerable benefit claimants and whether its approach to safeguarding needs to change.

All we have now are rumours and speculation. We'll get a clearer picture next month.
What the government say and what actually happens are two different things. There will be a long process to changing benefits and the bills to change them will be watered down if it's too controversial and cruel.
We have MPs on our side. Just yesterday, Richard Burgon called out the government for scapegoating disability benefit claimants.

you are very kind Catherine but what you are suggesting would require someone on this forum whom can reach far and command respect.
I’ve voiced some controversial views in the past and majority of scope member either regularly disagree with my posts or don’t take them seriously.
Also I’ve never liked being in the spotlight and have always been a backstager
I can think of 2, prehaps 3 scope members (excluding mods) that if they suggested doing something I’d be pm’ing to offer to help in any way I can
I’ve said it before - the disabled community is absolutely rubbish in utilising its large numbers and work together (like the black lives matters and lbgtq2+ social groups - much more organised and in unison than us)
The disabled community is so fractured that politicians just don’t fear repercussions from us……if larger numbers of us started to work together on a campaign of sorts (and get media attention) I think some MPs may not think us so easily rolled over
Do a Google search on dwp/disability and browse through social media - more and more disabled ppl and journalists are recognising that disability activism and activity across the community needs to start now before reforms are announced - but there’s a lack of a ‘leader’ or campaign acting as a beacon light to draw us together
The disability organisation DPAC are probably best placed to launch any legal action
however Scope is one of the biggest disability online communities in the uk and I hope someone figures out how to reach out to all of us (they don’t even need a plan of action, it’s more about getting the numbers ready)
to all scope members - if you aren’t already online disability activists it’s time you startedAnd to @Catherine21 - I think you’d be the first one to admit you are a bit of a headless chicken and your fears overwhelm you - however you don’t need to be smart to let the fear drive you to take positive action. I’ve read your posts when you haven’t gone into overdrive and you’ve said some intelligent things (plus you’re significantly better of posting many short &sweet posts on this forum then me - if you hadn’t noticed i specialise in ‘essay’ length posts)
I think you do have the ability to reach multiple scope members Catherine as right now the plan of action isn’t important, it’s about being able to easily reach ppl once a corner of the disabled community has a plan of action and needs help with the momentum
for now @Catherine21 I’ll leave you the following link that may help you have something to build upon (all those not great at composing letters/emails may find this link helpful too2 -
I've Clicked the link and sent an email off.

I remember years ago worked at the job centre it was horrific the goverment underpay over work i used to see people crying begging staff has lost humanity under piles of paperwork to many claimants for one member of staff claimants dehumanised it comes from the top and seeps down remeber reading an article how the whole setup of going for assessments ie buildings are designed in a way to make the people feel uneasy

I'm in people's faces day and night atm on social media and email.
people are probably sick of me turning up in their feeds correcting their views with real experiences or telling them to use their position as an mp to call out the basic lies.

My doctor is amazing he always explains that my autism is very severe that's why I have a carer and appointee, he always explains it severely affects my memory, coordination, judgement and that I can't cope at all with socialising in person or routine change and there will be a massive risk to me or their (property) if They don't basically back off.

trigger warning - sounds like a particularly tough weekend incoming
(I don’t know if that’s more media attacks on the disabled, semi official announcements of a very bad nature or a mixture of the 2 - all I know is that John who runs the DNS is a particularly reliable journalist/author and if he’s advising to brace and take care on one’s self then he has a good reason)
