Upcoming changes to benefits

if a pip freeze saves the dwp an average of £5 per claimant per week (there are 3.6 million total pip claimants as of 2025)
That would save dwp £936 million in the first year of a freeze
If the freeze continued for a second year - year 2 would be a accumulated £1.87 billion (total 2 year pip freeze saving guesstimate of £2.9 billion)
And if a pip freeze continued to a third year - the third year accumulated savings would rise to approx £2.9 billion (total pip savings due to 3yr freeze being £5.8billion)
I’m obviously excluding any rise to pip claimant numbers over that 3 years but checking my sums that adds up to the majority of the £6bil reeves is looking for and it’s a quicker and more guaranteed source of saving than any reform (look back in history - dwp reforms a benefit to save money but it actually ends up increasing the benefit billl - how is the dwp still a department with few wins and truckloads of epic fails)
(Not to mention the 1/6th of pip claimants (approx 600k) currently in work and in many cases only able to do so because of the award and allow them to continue contributing to the economy via being in the workforce and maybe paying ni/income tax (adding millions to the treasury pot)
Yes a 3 year pip freeze would cost each of the 3.6 million current pip claimants £1560 over 3 years but that is significantly significantly significantly better than losing the award altogether to the average pip claimant point of view surely?
Then the likes of Kendall could then slow things down - by actually spending time developing actual true benefit reforms that are fairer and actual non mandatory schemes (like some of the semi successful ones that existed 10-20 years ago before funding was axed) that may help a few disabled into work at their own pace (or Kendall could finally see the value of disabled doing volunteer work and favour praise over a ‘well that person is well enough to jump paid employment hoops then’)
finally I’m going to have a messy, arrogant b***h moment (sorry in advance):
But starmer, if you spend your Sundays lurking on disability forums - there you go, I did part of reeves and Kendall’s job for them above for free (no £200k+ combined salary) and are available for a much lower fee to offer my services in thinking up further solutions that don’t anger bulk of population 🤣
(My main issue is there’s a lot of scope members with the ability to outthink the likes of reeves and Kendall so probably don’t make it into the scope member top 50 candidacy……….if that was a thing 🤣🥰🤪😘😘)

are you that first forum member who studied law? (prehaps a legacy member will know)
big welcome to all the scope forum newbies 🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳
(I think I’m a little drunk right now………though I’m teetotal - caffeine high prehaps 😂……….wacky from v little sleep in 9 days more likely 🤣)1 -
that would be the most humane and efficient way to cut costs . Maybe that’s why the pip freeze is possibly off the table now. They’d go ahead with the worst ideas

I thought a PIP freeze would only save around £60 per year per claimant?

I thought a PIP freeze would only save around £60 per year per claimant? Even if it was £5 per week, 5x52 x 3 (years) = £780. But i don't remember my PIP increasing by £260 every year!

I think it depends on the rate of inflation each year . I’d prefer the freeze for a few years to the other alternatives
2 -
Does that mean they will do it parliament

maths is definitely not my strong point but I can’t work the amounts out myself. But no matter what the savings I’d rather that than what they’re possibly planning on doing

See streeting is saying doctors are over diagnosing mental health illness. The daily rag saying that pip you don't need evidence which is a lie. The comments are horrible, one saying adhd and autism is excuse for bad behaviour

That's a very good point, and one i'd not even thought of, perhaps because I just get so worked up and stressed out about it all(like we all are!!). Iv'e read your insightful posts many times on here and you always explain things in a very good and meaningful way, and give a different perspective to things. I think I was just worrying more about them changing the goal posts for getting PIP as I suffer with mental health issues,a nd they keep saying we're basically making it all up.
I think you'd do a much better job than Reeves and Kendall, and have better ideas then them combined, probably more empathy too!! There was also another member on here too that gave very good advice Poppy but I'm unsure what's happened to her, unless she's taking a break from it all, which isn't surprising at all as it gets a bit overwhelming. Keep on giving the good advice you put minds at rest.

on a lighter note to give you all a nice thought its only 40 weekends till Christmas 😀

With the change of pip criteria would that be for those who are currently on it , or those who reviews or new claimants

My guess is Poppy will be back Tuesday when the officially announce something. She probably avoids the speculation stage. It's understandable why we do it tho, it's our livelihood at stake!

As a working autistic person who claims PIP I also feel cheated, because people like me are already doing what the govt want us all to do. Especially as I have had zero support from the state with regard to getting a job. I've had to work lower paid jobs at base level income despite my experience and qualifications so that I can prove myself (most non-disabled people would not have to do this). My disability is invisible, but I feel even more invisible at the moment with all this conflation of benefits and the complete disregard for what PIP is in a working disabled person's life.
Someone mentioned the points and how they are allocated depending on the assessor. I can 100% see this.My mother has been trying to teach me to cook an egg for three decades now, with no success. I can't use a tin-opener, and I am incapable of heating anything from frozen. I can use the microwave but sometimes forget to stir something and put it back on for the second couple of minutes, so I have absolutely eaten ready meals half cooked. My directional issues mean I don't know which way to turn a hob dial or which plates are on when trying to cook food. All of these are obvious safety hazards in my food preparation, and as I was diagnosed as an adult, there had been many attempts to teach me as a child that had failed.
But according to the "autism expert" lady in my tribunal, I was lazy and my parents just didn't bother to teach me stuff. Probably because the idea of an intellectually capable but practically incompetent autistic person was not in her head. Executive dysfunction affects 80% of autistic people but it is NEVER mentioned in PIP assessments, in the paperwork, nor understood by the people assessing. From that tribunal, I was awarded 2 points for food preparation. It was only after my subsequent review that this was upgraded to 4, which is I believe more correct given that I'm clearly not safe to cook unsupervised.
We are all so reliant on the knowledge/prejudices or otherwise of the people making decisions, not enough of whom have lived experience or knowledge of disability.4 -
Do you have a link to the new proposed points system

Not reputable but nothing is at this stage…

Do you have links to DWP vacancies? as whenever I have looked I have found almost nothing, and just management type roles.

I think it may of been me mentioning the points in regards to assessors. If these changes come in I will definitely record any assessments and challenge to points.
I understand exactly what you’re saying in regards to cooking . I can’t turn taps on without forgetting and flooding us. My sons now banned me as I’m also hard of hearing so don’t even hear the water splashing . I also get lost in unfamiliar places and get confused with left and right .

Yep this is right, if they abandon the freeze, that puts more emphasis on eligibility changes, as you said a freeze is far more preferable and reasonable and savings do add up if its multiple years in succession, whilst the losses also add up the same way, you are right in my opinion this is far easier to endure knowing that people wont lose eligibility. The wrong part of it drawn the media attention.
Do we have statistics for how standard/enhanced awards are broken down?1 -
The calculation used is based on a PIP freeze of £5 per week per person. That's £260 a year. We do not get £260 a year extra year on year🤣
