1st in 5 years - hairdresser tomorrow
Because it's so expensive and because I detest the experience, I've avoided the hairdresser more and more since forever, and stopped going altogether 5 years ago. I hate the experience for being trapped in the chair, the constant touching, that it takes so frikkin long, as well as the constant blabbing by the hairdresser and their personal inquiries about me. It's just so physically and emotionally overwhelming and invasive. But my hair really needs fixing at this point and there's a big family wedding on May 16, so I'm doing it. I would like to be able to go once in a while for special occasions. So hopefully this works out and I have the option to go again in the future.

Thank you @Bluebell21 That's very frequent. I've had short stretches in my life where I liked the pampering, but not much. All the other negative aspects take over. Plus I'm really good at pampering myself. Oh, plus they often don't do what I ask for.

I have a mobile hairdresser comes to my home every eight weeks.
It does take long time having my hair done but the result is worth it.

I go in thinking; they might get it right this time 😆 the hair wash and head massage is the only moment of calm for me!

What's the worst they've got it wrong? How did it look?
For me it was my fringe being cut slanted, I had to fix it with a pair of scissors when I was at home.

If you don't like going to the Hairdresser, have a look on Google for mobile ones in your area who'll come to you rather than you going to them.
They'd be using your water and Lecky for their equipment, and drinking your tea or coffee, but it'd be less stressful than you going to them because you'd be in the comfort of your own Home.

I'm not a fan of the hairdressers. I went a few months ago and thought I'd make it a regular thing but then thought of the cost, having to get parked, making small talk etc and I haven't been back! I've actually always cut my own hair. I was previously using kitchen scissors but I've upgraded to proper hairdressing ones now 😂

Yeah, £15 for a light trim? Eh?! And the Hairdresser girls get paid Peanuts.

I put off going to a salon for as long as possible when I was in my teens and early 20s. But then one day, I tried to dye my (very, very dark) hair blonde at home and it went terrible so I had no choice but to go to a salon and pay them to sort it out🤣I then had a mobile hairdresser who was my mams friend so that took a lot of the small talk and pressure off as they would just chat and catch up.
Unfortunately, she retired a couple of years ago so now I go to a salon again because I'm not brave enough to cut and dye my greys at home yet after the blonde incident!!!!!
I just wish I could drop off my hair, they cut and colour it and then I pick it back up at the end of the day like a lego person😅1 -

Back in the 80s I used to have haircuts from the daughter of a friend of Mum's.
She did a right good job as I recall, and didn't charge anything.

I'm not keen on the small talk either lol, I'll feel awkward and a bit anxious when it's with someone that I don't know and I can never think of much to say.

I find it quite tiring. It's hard enough to think of things to say but then they start talking while they're drying your hair!

It's one of the advantages of being deaf that, as soon as I take my hearing aid out I'm deaf as a doorpost and can't hear a thing.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and for your suggestions. What a treat to have you onboard when I went yesterday! You were most helpful in getting through. It was extremely stressful, but I'm still alive to tell you about it. 😁 The idea of someone coming to my house is perhaps something to consider in the future. But for now I'd like to keep trying to get out of the house. By the way, usually I do a great job myself, but the last time I cut it was a disaster.
I tried to focus on grounding exercises but they didn't work. I got really upset because the hairdresser just couldn't understand what I was saying even though I repeatedly showed her pictures. The hairdresser said she was finished the cut, but it was miles from what I said, so the hairdresser working beside us tried explaining what I meant, which was exactly what I was saying. So I asked if I could have her do my hair. So she finished it and it was exactly as I wanted. A happy ending at least! And the next time I can ask for her. And it will surely be less stressful because there are less unknowns.

Thanks @Rosie_Scope ! Like @Rachel_Scope a couple of years ago I invested in a proper scissors set, so hopefully I can keep up with it for at least 3 or 4 months now, before my next big family function in August!
Oh, and @SheffieldMan1976, I did the 'deaf' thing by popping in one earbud to listen to my soft music playlist. That kept chatting to a minimum and helped calm me down. I do that in public often, but never tried it for a haircut. Even though you didn't mean it as an idea, you made me think of it. Thanks! 🙏🏼

Yes, that's my hope and plan. There are a lot of "trapped" triggers in my life that I'm addressing through desensitisation therapy. The hairdresser is one of them. So each time I go it should get easier
