Disabled People facing rising abuse when using their Blue Badge
Disabled people who rely on Blue Badges say they are facing rising abuse and harassment.
According to a recent study of over 300 disabled Blue Badge holders in 2026;
67% experienced harassment whilst using their badge.
32% had been threatened with violence.
6% had been physically attacked.
These shocking statistics were discussed on BBC Morning Live and ex police detective Rav Wilding shared some useful boundary-setting phrases if a disabled badge holder is confronted.
"I'm not prepared to discuss this with you."
"Please leave me alone."
"I have a legal right to use this space."
These statements can shut a conversation down making it clear this is none of their business.
As a disabled person with cerebral palsy I have experienced judgement using my Blue Badge and it feels awful.
This is a huge issue for people with a hidden disability. No one with a Blue Badge should judged or harassed for using a disabled bay.
A Blue Badge is not a perk; rather, it provides disabled people the essential means to access facilities and attend appointments with the same ease as non disabled people.

Thats awful.
I haven't experienced any abuse, just the stare of disgust because my disabilities are 'invisable'.

I experienced someone just standing and staring the whole time I was getting my daughters wheelchair out of the boot of the car.
I got my daughter into the wheelchair and put her oxygen on person still there standing staring.
For the whole of the time about ten minutes this person stood and stared at us even though I had put the blue badge in the window.
It was quite intimidating neither of us spoke.

I would've told this person to touch grass and jog on.
