Just had first UC payment notification. We moved to UC from tax credits on a Migration Notice and we were told we would not lose any money. The amount is much less and no Transitional Protection has been applied, despite an advisor acknowledging it in the journal at the beginning of our claim.
I've added another note to the journal. Has anyone else had this issue ? It is £590 less than it should be

Yes, I’ve heard of many people’s first payment being incorrect due to TP not included or they have the calculation wrong.

All you can do is wait for someone to respond to your journal message, did you put it under the payment section?

It would be impossible for any advisor to tell you what TP you would be entitled to because it will depend on the figures from your Tax Credits claim and what your maximum UC entitlement is.

Thanks for letting us know @Ikonik, a lot of people have been asked to migrate in the past few months. It seems like that is meaning a lot more is slipping through the cracks and going wrong. I hope it gets sorted!

Coming back to this because I have some information from elsewhere, UC do not always calculate your TP in time for your first payment. When this happens you should be contacted shortly after your first payment when they should have then calculated the amount correctly.

    Have you heard anything?

Yes, we had a note in the journal. They paid the UC and the Transitional element separately

That's great news! I'm glad to hear that those I had the information from were spot on.

We had our 1st UC payment last week after migration from WTC. Our payment is £225 less than what we would have got under WTC for the same period. I have rang the UC helpline and was told to put a note on my journal with the ref number that was on the migration letter ,that was on the 27th Feb, still no response at all on journal. Rang the helpline again this morning, told me they would put a note on my file for my work coach to look at it. Still nothing. Very worrying indeed why it can be so much less money and our wages haven't changed since WTC.

@berry61 it seems to be normal that TP is calculated after you receive your first payment. Once it’s done you will receive a letter in your journal. It will need to be a decision maker that looks at it.

Hopefully you will hear something soon.

Thanks Poppy123456,  I did speak with Citizens advice and a very helpful gentleman went through all our details then replied with a great detailed email and suggested posting another journal entry under payments and add the migration reference from the letter. We just need an explanation of how the figures have been calculated and if TP has been correctly applied. I will keep the forum posted of what response or explanation we get for anyone else's similar situation.

I have just received my first payment notification too without the transitional payment I am £664 short of what I should be getting I even double checked with the turn2us benefit calculator and that shows I am getting way less than I should they can’t get away with this certainly I have a disability and was getting severe disability premiums so my transitional payment should reflect that.

Often the TP isn't calculated in time for the first statement, as UC have to receive various pieces of information from other departments.

Put a note onto your Journal (under payments), and ask why the TP hasn't been added.

It's not unusual for the TP not to be calculated in time for your first payment. If you have access to a journal put a message on there and tell them. If you don't then you'll need to ring the helpline.

I applied for the UC migration per instruction mid October ‘24 and after countless messages logged stating no TP after the CAB had assessed my migration and said I was entitled to it. All I get as a response is ‘We are awaiting the team who deals with this to ‘fix’ the glitch that stops us paying you!’ I suspect that this is not an error and simply the DWP’s way of holding on to money to benefit them rather than us!

Contact your local MP and hopefully they will contact UC on your behalf.

what is the situation with uc and ‘missing transitional protection’ now in early 2025 (now that dwp are dealing with tens of thousands of claimants coming in via managed migration)

I wasn’t given an transitional element on my first uc payment calculations (legacy esa award was support group with sdp and edp elements, no change of circumstance)

I put a message in my uc journal under payments over a week ago explaining what my legacy esa award was and why I thought they’d miscalculated, asked for them to send a breakdown of their calculations and asked them to relook at my award amount (I didn’t use the words ‘mandatory reconsideration’ which prehaps I should of done)

but it’s been crickets (dwp staff don’t seem to fudging look at the uc journal - if the dwp actually hired enough online staff and managed it properly then the uc journal could be a positive improvement on esa in terms of communication imo)

It sounds like if I don’t get the dwp to acknowledge that they’ve miscalculated and not added the TP into their uc award calculations by the end of my next uc assessment period (now in less than 3 weeks) then I’ll never get the transitional element added even though it’s the dwp mistake as they don’t fudging talk to the legacy benefit/esa department

I’m stressed as hell (didn’t the dwp civil servant in charge say they sorted all the issues with tp carrying over from legacy benefits? - well that’s total bull!)

is anyone else in the same mess or was in the same mess but got everything sorted?

    any advice?
