@poppy123456 Thank you. I was confused as someone said they qualify for new esa despite only being in the SG and not having worked recently so i wondered if somehow being on that benefit contributed credits to NI.

No problem. Being in the SG doesn't automatically mean you qualify for New style ESA and it depends what your ESA is made up. They wouldn't normally qualify just through NI credits alone but when part of the ESA is CB then that part reverts to New style.

For anyone that's currently claiming any ESA they will also receive class 1 NI credits. The only time you won't receive those is if you're named on a partners claim because only the main claimant will receive NI credits.

@macca3 I'm really sorry but I just can't read your comment. Using capital letters when typing is known as shouting in text speak. That as well as no paragraphs makes it even more difficult to read. 😑

I didn't see this comment from you earlier today because I see we both commented at the same time so your comment was missed. This is the problem when asking questions on extremely long threads, those questions can go missed.

My thread here is not more than 16 pages long and that's an awful lot to keep up with. I have health conditions myself and sometimes it's a struggle.

You will not have had an underlying entitlement to contributions based ESA. Part of your old ESA was contributions based because you either worked in the 2 tax years prior to your claim or your moved from Incapability Benefit.

Those that are placed onto contributions based will always remain on this for as long as they remain in the Support Group because it's not time limited like the WRAG is.

If your ESA includes the Income Related top up (disability premiums) then it will be known as Income Related but the correct wording is actually contributions based with an Income Related top up. ESA letters are also very well known for making no sense at all, even for someone like myself who has quite a decent amount of benefits knowledge.

The reason why your CB ESA is moving to New style is because you've now migrated to UC so it will revert to New style automatically. You will need to agree to your claimant commitments which will just be to agree to report all changes, the same as what it will be for UC.

Yes, there are advantages to claiming New style ESA at the same time as UC. For the ESA it's paid fortnightly but UC is monthly so it can definitely help to budget a little better with money coming in more regular. For UC you'll only receive class 3 NI credits but for ESA you'll receive class 1.

The ESA is also not means tested like UC is so it could come in very useful in the future because savings/capital, pensions of up to £85/week and a working partner do not affect the amount you're entitled to. Whilst none of those may apply to you now, we can't predict what may happen in the future. There's so many people that had wished they claimed this or the old contributions based ESA when they could have but didn't know about it and now they are unable to claim due to lack of NI contributions. Therefore, it's definitely worth continuing with the claim.

Your ESA amount will be £276.40 every 2 weeks but it will be deducted in full from any UC entitlement. You will also have the UC payment which tops up your income.

I hope this helps make everything a little more clearly for you. ☺️Yes, benefits are a minefield too.

Thank you Poppy for all your help. So can I apply for New Style Esa but get Uniersal credit instead of Housing benefit

See previous comment for more information. I just wanted to reply to this comment. You said you were claiming Incapacity benefit before ESA so this is why your ESA was part contributions based. Those that migrated from IB to ESA and were placed into the Support Group were placed onto contributions based ESA.

No Problem. No, that's not what I advised. If you applied for New style ESA now then this would mean you'll be worse off because the SDP in your current ESA would end.

New style ESA isn't part of UC, it's a completely different benefit. You should not claim UC until you receive the managed migration letter, unless a change of circumstances prompts a move in the meantime.

Poppy, I think, sometimes, the people who are using Capital letters are visually impaired, and that is how their supporting devices work. It was expalined by someone in the past, somwhere.

I apologise, but it's just impossible for me to read because my head just can't focus on one large block of capital letters. There's members here that are partially sighted that don't use capital letters.

hi everyone just a quick question if you’re in a pointy for your and you have to do more like universal credit I understand that she has to be part of my client but what happens if she hasn’t got all the relevant documents and is a list that I could look at to see what she needs to prove her identity? Would to go to the job centre to prove her identitywhen a claim is being processed? Thanks for the help everyone

I don't want to start a whole new thread for this question but just want to check whether UC now includes a section for disregarded capital or not?

When I migrated, I was asked to put the exact figure from every bank account on that day. I did exactly that. But then realised there was nowhere to 'remove' the income from PIP, ESA & HB (pre-migration) and nowhere to remove the COL payments either. So that figure wasn't the correct amount of capital.

I feel like I should correct that error on the final day of my current payment period. But I don't want to get it wrong again and I don't want to to open the page early to check. So the question is, do I put the full amount in one box, and then remove the disregarded capital in another box? Or do I just put the full amount minus the disregards in the first box? I'm concerned that if I do that and they ask for bank statements, the statement figures will obviously be different and potentially cause staff confusion which could cause more issues for myself.

(PS - I'm not asking which parts are disregarded, I understand that, I just don't trust them to understand that!)

I don't know the answer to your question because I've never personally reported any capital other than the day I claimed UC for my daughter. I just didn't want to read this and not comment.

You may want to start a new thread with your question because this thread is now into 16 pages and your question could be missed by someone that may have experience through reporting capital their self.

Sorry should say wouldn't have to look for work.

That's not correct, you are confused. As my guide advises at the start of this thread, if you're in the Support Group you'll be entitled to the LCWRA element from the start of your claim. This is the same as the Support Group and will not be expected to look for work or attend appointments, after your first appointment.

Yes I corrected myself underneath. I couldn't find a way to edit the original comment. My mistake.
