World Autism Acceptance Month – Introduction for Parents and Carers

As we are right in the middle of World Autism Acceptance month, I thought we could make it this weeks focus so we can talk all about autism in children and what you as parents can do to support!
Each autistic person has a unique experience and as a parent or carer, understanding this can help you navigate your journey with greater empathy and support.
What is Autism?
Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), refers to a range of neurological and developmental conditions that impact communication, social interaction and behaviour. It's called a "spectrum" because it affects people differently and to varying degrees.
Some children may have mild symptoms while others may face more significant challenges in their daily lives.
Common Signs of Autism in Children
While every autistic child is unique, there are certain signs you may notice such as..
Social Challenges - difficulty making eye contact, engaging in conversation or understanding social cues
Communication Differences - speech delays, repetitive language, or difficulty expressing needs and feelings
Repetitive Behaviours - engaging in repetitive motions (such as hand-flapping) or routines
Sensory Sensitivities - over or under-sensitivity to lights, sounds, textures or smells.
Focused Interests - intense focus or interest in specific topics or activities
I would love to hear your thoughts, questions and experiences. Whether you're just starting this journey with your child or have years of experience, your voice matters here on the community.
What have you learned along the way? Do you have any tips for new parents navigating this journey?
