Part One - Summer Holiday Support Series Introduction
Part Two - Accessible Days Out for Parents and & Carers of Disabled Children
Part Three - Keep Routine At Home in the Summer Holidays
Part Four - Sensory Friendly and Accessible School Uniforms (Where To Buy)
The summer holidays can be a fun time but they can also bring extra challenges. Between juggling childcare, keeping the children entertained and managing household routines without the usual school schedule it can be easy to feel overwhelmed so it’s important to remember that your mental health and wellbeing matter just as much as your child’s!
I have created this post to hopefully help you know that you’re not alone and I hope you find these small steps are helpful and validating.
Take Small Moments for Yourself
- I know this can be easier said than done but even little breaks to breathe, stretch or enjoy something you love can make a big difference. This may be a cup of tea, a quick walk or listening to your favourite music, it's however self care looks to you.
It’s Okay to Have "Do Nothing" Days
- Not every day has to be packed with fun or exciting activities (I know social media can make us feel otherwise!), Sometimes, just getting through the day quietly is a huge win and that’s more than enough! Don’t feel pressured to always be “on” or doing something amazing. Saying no, taking it easy and having some downtime is 100% okay and important for your wellbeing as well as your childrens.
Reach Out to Your Support Network
- Talking with others who understand your journey can be really helpful, these may be friends, family or fellow parents or this online community.!
Access Additional and Professional Support If Needed
- If you're feeling low, anxious or overwhelmed even after the summer holidays and you're still struggling please remember professional support is available and can make a real difference. You're not alone, there are there organisations to support you such as Mind, Carers UK, Samaritans, self refer for talking therapies and your GP should also be able to help.
How do you manage you wellbeing and mental health as a parent in the school holidays? Do you have any tips you would like to share with other members?
