OK so ..... if rent goes up 20 you lose 20 everyone breath I think I might have got this the confusing part for me was not knowing around abound sum
0 -
No, that’s not correct. You won’t lose £400 when you claim UC. You won’t receive SDP either because it doesn’t exist. You will receive Transitional Protection instead.
No, not quite. If housing element increases you will not be worse or better off if you still have TP on your claim. Your entitlement will remain the same.
I totally get that you don’t understand numbers. I live with my daughter who is exactly the same. It doesn’t matter how much i explain something that includes numbers, she just doesn’t understand.

I'm the same with numbers ,think I have discalculia . So if your rent goes up , will your TP go down because of it. Its so confusing
0 -
Yes that’s correct. The same will apply to all elements if they increase, or you become entitled to other elements.
0 -
So my rent goes up each year, so basically I be worse off due to the Tp being eroded. At the moment my rent is fully covered, so that won't be the case . Won't the housing element cover it like Housing benefit does
0 -
No, you won’t be worse off but you won’t be better off either because of the erosion of the TP.
When you claim UC the housing element should be the same amount as your housing benefit.0 -
Would it be worth trying?
When I receive the Managed Migration letter, can I ask them to cancel the migration as I will be worse off in the long run as a single person?
I sow it somewhere:
“Notice can be cancelled if issued in error or not in the best interest of the claimant.”

You don’t have to claim UC if you don’t want you. You can contact the managed migration team to cancel it.
What do you mean you’ll be worse off in the long run? If you don’t claim UC your existing means tested benefits will end, that will make you worse off.

@vikki66 Transitional Protection (TP) only lasts for 1 year for those migrating from Tax credits if they have capital of more than £16,000.
For everyone else it lasts for as long as it lasts and that will depend on each individual circumstances.
Yes once it erodes completely and benefits increase then yours will also increase.

I know you don't get thespecial disability payment with UC . So the tp only for an certain time. So without the special disability payment, under UC will I be worse off once the tp eroded.
Sorry if I sound thick

PIP isn’t part of UC and neither is child benefit so neither of those increasing would affect it.
New style ESA is deducted in full from your UC but that deduction doesn’t erode TP.
0 -
What special disability payment? Or do you mean Severe Disability Premium? (SDP)
For those that have TP included in their UC once it erodes completely you won’t be worse or better off. The only difference being is that at the moment with your ESA it includes the SDP because you live alone and claiming a qualifying disability benefit. Theres no such thing in UC so eventually you’ll be receiving the same as everyone else. If that makes sense.
Transitional Protection has always eroded over time, same applied for those migrating from Incapacity Benefit to ESA many years ago. The only difference now is that UC includes help with your rent so it feels worse because your rent entitlement will also be frozen until TP ends.

Sorry to jump on what does rent entitlement be frozen I have to pay bedroom tax will that effect
0 -
Hope you OK
1 -
Bedroom tax is a percentage of your rent so if you have 1 spare bedroom it's a 14% deduction on your housing element, same as it is for UC. If your landlord increases your rent then yes the bedroom tax amount will also increase. You will still need to pay the shortfall.
1 -
Sorry to hear that. Yes, you asked the question correctly and I understood it. I also answered it correctly.
It's only ESA that's deducted in full from your UC and this will not affect the TP, even if benefits increase annually. The amount deducted for the ESA will obviously increase if benefits increase.
