I just don’t want to apply for it for him too soon then get in trouble and have to pay money back

You can't get into trouble because you wouldn't have done anything wrong. If you claim now then you will not receive any further payments for him with UC, which I did advise. As it's not long until the end of your next assessment period you may want to wait but that's entirely up to you.

If he does continue in full time education then you may run into issues due to the rules on full time students claiming UC but it's complicated.

Thank you Poppy , yes I did think that so we will wait until the 11th August which is our last payment with his child element in it.

No problem. You will need to check your next statement to see if they've included it for this month.

Either way, you can start a claim the day after the last day of this current assessment period. If payment date is 11th of every month that will mean your assessment periods are 5th to 4th of every month. Therefore you can claim on 5th August.

You can start to fill in the form and save it for up to 28 days. Please make sure you don't submit it until at least 5th August.

Hi hope you are all ok.

Obviously our UC entitlement will be a lot less now our disabled son is almost 19. Is there a reliable calculator we can use for an idea of new amount because the 2 I have tried keep saying different things. From what I’ve worked out we will lose over £700 a month which obviously we knew would happen once he reached an adult it’s just a shock.

Just deduct the elements that are for your son. The child element would have been the higher amount of £333.33.

If his PIP includes the Enhanced daily living then it would be the higher disabled child element of £487.56/month. Total amount for both is £820.29/month.

If his PIP award is any other award then it would be the lower disabled child element of £156.11/month. Total monthly amount £489.44/month.

Do you have any other dependent children at home? if so and they were born before 6th April 2017 then you will now receive the higher child element for them, so the deduction would be slightly less.

Yes, it's quite a shock when benefits stop for our children but it happens to everyone. It was the same for me back in 2021 when I was claiming Tax credits, although for those I was able to continue with it until the day before my daughters 20th birthday because the rules were different for Tax credits. I also lost more than £800/month.

When he claims UC please don't forget about asking him for some money towards his "keep." They may have disabilities but they need to understand that life isn't free and they need to pay their way. I've always taken board from my daughter, in fact there's only 2 of us at home and the bills are shared 50/50.

We have a 13 year old daughter on DLA high care low mobility.

Thank you Poppy. I’m getting stressed. I appreciate you.

You're welcome. That means the deduction would be £775.50/month. It's an extremely large drop in income but you will manage and your son can contribute because he also has his PIP too.

It was a big shock to me and took a while to manage the budget. Now I can budget just fine and usually manage to save some and have a holiday. I have 2 grandchildren, who aren't cheap 😂I often get the words… nanny, I can have this please, or just the eyes flickering is all that's needed. They cost a fortune. 😂

Once you've submitted the claim it won't be as stressful and you'll be fine. I found claiming for my daughter quite easy and I'd never seen a UC form before then.

Thank you Poppy you help me a lot.

Bless your grandchildren, I bet it’s lovely being a grandmother.

My eldest daughter who is 22 moved out last year , she wants children but wants to enjoy time with her partner, go on holidays and persue her career before she has them. My husband can’t wait to be a Grandad tho haha! I am 12 years younger than him so feel slightly different hehe! But if one came along I’d love them like my own for sure.

I am also learning more about myself and beginning to now think I know where my children got their ADHD & Autism from.
As I grew up I knew I was different to others and 3 out of my 4 brother had autism but I just got on with things and muddled on but now researching and seeing how my children are I can see myself in them as I was as a child.

    Anyway.
Good night Poppy & once again thank you.

    Hi

I hope you are all ok.
My GP surgery made request for fit note , I explained what it was for but the GP didn’t ring me as at our medical centre they do everything via an app so they put it down as mental health so now I’ve got to wait until tomorrow (6/8/24) before I can get GP to correct it which receptionist said he can do ,we started our sons claim online today but haven’t put claim in yet as we waiting for fit note, is that the best thing to do?

Thank you for being so patient with me.

Being a nanny is the best feeling in the world. Completely different to your own children. It could be because you can give them back at the end of the day 😉

It’s good to hear you are beginning to understand yourself, that definitely helps.

With regards to the child and disabled child element this is because he doesn’t know if he’s returning to full time education and this is exactly what I thought would happen. If he doesn’t return then it’s correct that it shouldn’t have been paid for this assessment period.

For the fit note, you have 7 days to provide that once you report a health condition so you can go ahead to submit the claim for UC for him.

I bet it is nice! I’m glad you enjoy it.

He left college for summer on 19th July so he was still on there within assessment period , child benefit this morning said he’s getting child benefit until 2nd September even now he’s left college.

Unfortunately, for UC what counts is your circumstances on the last day of each assessment period. As he left college before the last day of your AP then you wouldn't have been entitled to it for this month.

If he was returning to college then you would have been entitled to it this month and that would have been your final payment for him.

I would expect your child benefit to end for him on 31st August if he isn't returning to college and not 2nd Sept.

    https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit-16-19

However, if he claims UC in his own right then child benefit will end, even if it's before 31st August.

Ok UC claim for son completed and submitted, GP has sorted the fit note from 5/8/24-6/10/24 and now sent dates on sons UC claim form. GP will give longer fit note when needed.

Thank you for your help Poppy, if you don’t mind I may (will) have more questions.
    I appreciate you.

Do people find that the UC workers whom reply on your journal not read what you’ve put fully and only answer some of your questions or queries?
Highly frustrating in my opinion. 😔
