You're welcome. Happy to help if you have any further questions. To be honest, I didn't have a problem when I claimed UC for my daughter but some work coaches aren't helpful.

Please remember that they are not benefits advisors.

Thank you Poppy, you bring me some peace in my head.

Who are the best benefit advisors would you say?

You're welcome. Umm Welfare Rights. If he does return to college you will need to report the changes to UC.

    Ok thank you.

Yesterday he said do I have to go back mum, I said no you don’t have to, you do what you feel is best for you and he said I don’t want to go back.

He’s had a rough couple years in college until our LA finally said yes to ehcp but then the damage done by the college was too late I think.
He’s achieved what he set out to achieve so for me that’s the main thing.
On to the next chapter how ever painful it is for my mummy heart.

    Hi

I wrote on my sons journal as though I was him to say that his Dad is his appointee and that I am (mum) his carer for his disability needs. Is that ok?

    Thank you.

They should automatically know because that changed a little while ago but it's fine to put the message on.

    Ok.
On sons UC journal he had a message for identity interview on the 19th at our local job centre plus and his Dad has to go with him.

No! your son should not be attending any appointments because he has an appointee. Please make sure the appointee is in place.

How do we make sure that appointee is in place?

    here is what it says

This message is for the attention of (claimants name ) and ( claimants name) appointee (appointees name)

A face to face appointment has been made for you both to attend the local job centre plus

So they are aware your son has an appointee, that's good. Your son should not be attending this appointment and it's wrong of them to ask him to attend. He has an appointee for a reason and they should take the ID for your son from your partner.

Ok what should we do please Poppy, my son was anxious when I said he was asked to go, any message he’s got so far he comes straight to me and asks what it means etc.

Put a message onto his journal and tell them that your son is unable to attend the appointment and shouldn't have to attend because he has an appointee.

Should I say that after receiving advice my son will not be attending due to him having an appointee and that his appointee will bring his identity on the 19th ?

From you. Your son should not be putting messages onto his journal because he has an appointee. That's what the appointee is for.

    Yes, tell them that.

Ok. My son is worried that if he doesn’t go the claim won’t processed as that is what it says on his message, and feels he should go, what shall I say to him as he doesn’t like doing things wrong and I don’t want to make him feel more anxious 😔 poor boy

They shouldn't be expecting him to attend. The reason he has an appointee in the first place is because he's unable to manage his own claim. It just makes me so frustrated when work coaches force these things on people.

If he prefers to attend he can BUT he doesn't have to and shouldn't be forced to do so.

    Ok thank you Poppy.
I will explain it to him how he will understand best then see what he says and how he feels.

    Thank you again.

I've read a few cases recently where the claimant must be 'seen' when providing ID for UC, even when they have an appointee. I am unsure if this is a new rule but as it's happening in different areas it can't just be the staff at Job Centre level saying it.

I can see it from their side. Technically the appointee could 'make up' a fictional person and claim on their behalf. (Although the amount of fake ID needed to do that would be massive!)

But they also need to understand that for many of us a Job Centre visit physically isn't possible.

I will be keeping an eye on this thread as I'm interested to see the outcome. I'm in a similar position (albeit without an appointee) but so far my local Job Centre hasn't come up with an acceptable solution.

I strongly suspect they'll offer you a phonecall or a home visit next.
